In many respects, there are contrasting and competing views at play when we look at Byzantium’s relations with its neighbours – whether in the Black Sea region or elsewhere for that matter. On the one hand, it is possible to compile a picture of Byzantine interest in its neighbours, of the Byzantines gathering information about those on its periphery, of sensitivity and alertness to shifts in power beyond the Empire’s frontiers, and of a state able and actively seeking to respond to such changes as necessary.
This contrasts sharply with the other – and in many ways the more dominant – picture which can be drawn from the historiography of the middle Byzantine period, with its relentless accent on Romanitas and on the superiority of Byzantium and its culture over those around it – to the point, indeed, where chroniclers fail even to record very substantial changes to the Empire’s frontiers. So, for example, while we are certainly not lacking source material for the third quarter of the 11th Century – with narrative accounts of Michael Psellos, Michael Attaleiates, John Skylitzes, Nikephoros Bryennios covering this period in considerable detail – it is striking to note that none of these historians discusses the growth of Norman power in southern Italy or the consequent collapse of Byzantine authority there; indeed, only one of these authors even mentions the fall of Bari in 1071 which brought to an end centuries of Byzantine power in Italy.

Much has been debated, among others by Samir Khalil, concerning the need for cataloging and giving an account for the collection of Christian-Arabic manuscripts in the different Libraries, alongside the urgency in publishing such material.
Added to the scarcity of inventories of this specifically Christian collection (one rare exception, still incomplete, being that of the Monastery of St. Catherine, in Mount Sinai) and the lack of scientific rigor of many of the existing catalogs from the 19th century and even the 20th century, the scornful treatment of Christian works, remarkable cases excepted, is to be emphasized in the two well-known important repertoires.
The only relevant overall work we can consult is the great work by Graf and still, this is being updated under the supervision of Samir Khalil, as there are some lacunae, and lack of information about the manuscripts, the error in the identification, classification, and analysis of many samples, this said with no disregard for the great achievements of the work
It seems obvious that there is still a hard and lengthy work ahead that the materials and places to go into are manifold, and the nature of documents is varied. In addition, the recuperation of the material already edited or presented as the pre-edited state, no matter how valuable it is, must be collected, analyzed, and taken some profit out of it, if the chance is offered.
In this line and according to the above mentioned, we attempt in this paper to announce an important unpublished manuscript: it is the Arabic version of the book of “Book of Psalms” translated from an Antiochean Greek ‘Abd Allāh b. al-Faḍl (11th cent). Such manuscript has special relevance because of the important exegetic material it contains and transmits. This MS, still unpublished, proves outstandingly relevant, especially because we do not have a critical edition of the Book of Psalms.

Muḥammad Ibn Manglī is one of the important writers in the late Mamluk period, who has written about the art of war in the Eastern Mediterranean. He has many historical works, nearly fourteen works, from which there is an important and valuable treatise, al-Aḥkām al-Mulūkiyya wal-ḍawābeṭ al-Nāmūsiyya fī fann al-Qitāl fī al-Baḥr [The Royal Orders and Divine arrangements in the Art of Naval warfare].
We can say that this is the sole and complete work, which speaks on the art of naval warfare in the Middle Ages, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean. On the European side, especially in Byzantium, we have some chapters speak of naval warfare in different works, such as the chapter of “Peri Naumachia” in the Tactica of the Byzantine emperor Leo the Wise (886-912 AD). However, there is not a complete Byzantine work such as Ibn Manglī’s al-Aḥkām al-Mulūkiyya.

The lack of studies on Islam by Greek scholars makes Yannoulatos’ book an interesting one. Yannoulatos examines the role of religion in Islam in three parts. He starts his introduction with the meaning of the term Islam and stresses the importance of knowing about it. He examines the nature and phases of the knowledge and investigation of Islam by non-Muslims and looks at the existing literature on Islam. He begins the first part examining the roots of Islam in four chapters.
